Life Insurance & Annuity
Life Insurance & Annuity
Life Insurance is a contract between you and an insurance company. Essentially, in exchange for your premium payments, the insurance company will pay a lump sum known as a death benefit to your beneficiaries after your death. Your beneficiaries can use the money for whatever purpose they choose, the primary purpose of life insurance is to protect survivors who depend on the insured person, also called the policy owner, for financial support. Unlike the beneficiaries of other types of insurance, the beneficiaries of life insurance — people who receive the benefits — aren't the insured person.
There are three major types of whole life or permanent life insurance—traditional whole life, universal life, and variable universal life, and there are variations within each type.
An Annuity is a long-term investment that is issued by an insurance company designed to help protect you from the risk of outliving your income. Through annuitization, your purchase payments (what you contribute) are converted into periodic payments that can last for life.
Annuities are essentially insurance contracts. You pay a set amount of money today, or over time, in exchange for a lump-sum payment or stream of income in the future. The type of annuity and the details of the particular annuity can determine the payouts you'll receive.
According to Fidelity, a $100,000 deferred income annuity today that is purchased by someone at age 60 would generate $671.81 a month ($8,061.72 a year) in income for a woman and $696.89 a month ($8,362.68 a year) in income for a man. Payments to women are lower because they have longer lifespans than men, There are two basic types of annuities: deferred and immediate. With a deferred annuity, your money is invested for a period of time until you are ready to begin taking withdrawals, typically in retirement. If you opt for an immediate annuity you begin to receive payments soon after you make your initial investment.
